When I was kid there was a programme called Why don't you..?. which had a theme song with the lyrics:
Why don't you just switch off your tv set and go and do something less boring instead
The irony of the lyrics weren't lost on us even at such tender years but it is particularly apt to my life right now. Well sort of. I've lent Mosh my iBook for a few days leaving me without a domestic computer and internet access.
Suddenly I'm realising how much time I spend on it whether it is just checking emails over breakfast or blogging while the news is on, checking RSS feeds, shopping, messing around with iTunes....
I have been forced to stay late in the office so I can write this and check my emails the number of which is rapidly rising without regular intervention. But I'm determined that I won't feel like my arm has been chopped off and I will make the most of this 'new' leisure time and go and do something less boring instead.
I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a massive fan of the Harry Potter books. Regretfully I got into them after seeing the
first film but I've lost no time in catching up and joining all the other fans in eagerly anticipating the each new installment. So the last book is a biggy for me. The final piece of the jigsaw. The answers to (most of) the questions. The big reveal.
I'm not pre-ordering it because you can walk into just about any shop that sell books and fall over piles of the buggers once it is out.
But my diary for the 21 and 22 July will be cleared. The phone won't get answered. There will be no batteries in the doorbell. TV, radio and iBook will remain off.
My biggest fear is that I accidentally find out what happens before I've read it for myself or worse still, someone tells me.
When the last book was published some jokers hung a banner across a busy A-road in Wales with the identity of the character who dies written on it. Funny to non-fans I'm sure but incredibly mean in my eyes.
I'm also re-reading all six books, the aim being to finish The Half Blood Prince a few days before the final publication date.
They are such a delight to read and I get completely sucked in half way through the first chapter.
Its fun scouring them for any tiny clues as to what might happen and in particular anything to indicate the identity and locations of the remaining horcruxes.
I really hope JK Rowling doesn't kill Harry off so that no one can persuade her to write any further books. I don't mind if she doesn't write any more but I just think it would be a bit mean after everything the character has gone through.
Finally got round to playing with the video setting on my new camera phone. Not only did I manage to shoot and edit a quick clip of Mosh mucking about but also set up my mobile as bluetooth device on my iBook so I could transfer said clip to my lappy.
I am so proud, although my ignorance of how this technology works is such that I've probably missed some vital security step and now anyone can use my mobile or access my bank details online or something.
Anyway, I hereby present, Mosh Mucking About, my first camera phone video production shot on location in Starbucks, Covent Garden:
I've just got my iBook back after Mosh borrowed it for a two day press trip. And it's hands up confession time - I missed it. How sad is that???? It made me realise how I actually look forward to checking my emails and, dare I say it, my blog. If I'm watching TV, I often have it next to me for a little surfing while the ads are on. And I didn't realise how much I did this until I didn't have it.
