A judge in New Zealand has made a 9-year old girl a ward of court so she can change her name. The girl was apparently too embarrassed to tell people her real name and I can't think why, I mean Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii has a certain ring to it.
And no I'm not joking her parents did really name her that. But what is more shocking is the list of names that Kiwi officials have blocked parents from using:
Yeah Detroit; Stallion Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins)
And if that wasn't bad enough here are some of the names that have actually been ALLOWED:
Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)
The latter is particularly classy and just goes to show that you probably shouldn't joke with parents expecting twins about calling them things like gin and tonic. (Thank goodness my friends Jenny and Spike are sane and didn't take any of mine and Mosh's suggestions for their boys names seriously, although I still think Moet and Chandon would have given them a regal air.)
Full story on the Beeb is here.
Found this story today an extract of which is below:
The revered British actor, who played the wise wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is in New Zealand with
the Royal Shakespeare Company to play the title role in King Lear.He intends to catch up with old friends while in Wellington, and Peter Jackson has invited him to stay at his home in Wairarapa.
"He kept the set of Bag End, which was Frodo's house, and set it up for guests with running water, so I'm going to spend the night there," Sir Ian said yesterday.
"It'll be the one the hobbits were in which made them look small, so it'll be big enough for humans."
Can I stay please?
If a waiter stopped by right now to take your order, what cocktail or drink are you having?
New Zealand sauvignon blanc. Chilled. Large glass. Please.
Just had my first Skype conversation!
My friend Alan is working in Geneva for three years and suggested I get set up so we can chat for free. It's taken me months, as usual, to actually get round to downloading all the right software and getting registered and set up.
Anyway a week or so has gone by without me really knowing how the whole thing actually works and then low and behold, I'm sat here on my sofa surfing the web and a little box pops up saying Alan's online and wants to talk.
A quick click of button and we are talking. No headphones or handsets just through the speakers and in-built microphone (which I didn't know my computer had). Talking to the lap top is weird but a little picture of Alan pops up which helps.
Definitely recommend it.
Now just need Rachel in Moscow and Megs in New Zealand to get set up.
What movie can you quote by heart?
Submitted by clamhead.I'm not really a sad film geek, honest, but it would have to be Lord of the Rings. All three. Saw them at the cinema loads of times in London and even once in New Zealand. I won't own up how many times oh all right 7 times. Each film. And no I don't want to know how many hours of my life that was.
Then of course there are the DVDs, theatrical and extended versions which I might have watched more than once too. What can I say except they are my preciousss. Sorry couldn't resist.
Mosh could never understand it but as I pointed out to him on several occasions, you wouldn't listen to an album once.
